Sesen’s Story
As cliche as it sounds, you see the EMTs and paramedics on TV and I kind of wanted that rush. I wanted the exposure to patient care. I love it. It's been great. I've learned so much from the people I work with, from my patients and all the skills I've developed. And there's always something new that you learn every day, so I can never be bored at work.
It's definitely very rewarding. It’s hard to explain but there's really no better feeling. It's nice because, you know, you feel like you've gained so much from your communities. It's nice to have such great partners that you know and interact with, like the fire department, doctors and nurses.
When you have really great partners to work with, you have great communication - and it shows it in your calls - everything flows. One person does one thing on scene, the other person knows exactly what the other one needs. And if you have a good team, especially because we'll deal with other crews as well, and everybody's on the same page, those successful calls are one of the best things. So I had a call with one of my permanent partners that I work with, and we actually had great progress. After compressions and giving them oxygen and everything we had a full, complete recovery. And so great team, great success.
My priority is doing exactly what I need to do for this patient. And once I focus on a patient, I communicate with them and ask them questions to make sure they know that I know what I'm doing and make them feel calm.
Courage is when you have to step up, especially during very difficult calls or sometimes where someone’s safety might be threatened and you have to do your job to make sure that your patients are cared for.
