Kyle’s Story

I got into it because I was in college and I said, You know, I'm not going to work in an office. I do not want to do that. I always kind of had police or fire in the back of my head. So I took the EMT class, and I started doing it, and I loved it. I was pretty good at it. So that's kind of how I stumbled into it. I wasn't planning to be a paramedic or anything like that, but kind of found my way in through looking for other things.

I stay in this profession because I like the people that I work with, you know, they're more of my family. I had so many of them at my wedding that I would just consider them more friends than co-workers. And it's a fun job at times, there's nothing else like it in the world.

It's definitely a good feeling to give back to the community. You feel accomplished, you feel satisfied that you've helped someone and that, you know, you've made a difference whether it's with them or their family. You can see the relief in their eyes a lot of the times when you’re there to do your job and that what you’re doing really helps. That makes you feel like you're doing good. You're doing the right thing.

The role of courage in EMS, I would say is just showing up. Someone's life depends on you doing your job.
