Fatima’s Story

I became an EMT because I like interacting with people. Every call is different and I get to help people in some of the worst times of their life.  Whether it’s an emergency or a simple transfer, I treat the patient the way I would want if someone was taking care of my family.

The job requires courage every day. You need the confidence and courage to take control.

You need to be very focused on what you’re doing because you have people’s lives in your hands. You need to be able to think and move and adapt very quickly, like gather information before you get to the hospital with the patient. You only have a few minutes to do that. You need to be on your toes all the time, no matter what. In this job you need to be focused and in the zone.

A great day on the job is when you have an impact on the patient. That could be a simple transfer, bringing a patient to, say, a rehab appointment. Many of our patients are older and may be alone, so being able to have a conversation with them and connect with them is a great day.

Giving back to my community has always been something I’ve been passionate about. It’s rewarding to be able to help someone. Make them smile when they’re having a bad day.
