      <image:title>Fatima's Story - Fatima’s Story</image:title>
<image:caption>I became an EMT because I like interacting with people. Every call is different and I get to help people in some of the worst times of their life. Whether it’s an emergency or a simple transfer, I treat the patient the way I would want if someone was taking care of my family. The job requires courage every day. You need the confidence and courage to take control. You need to be very focused on what you’re doing because you have people’s lives in your hands. You need to be able to think and move and adapt very quickly, like gather information before you get to the hospital with the patient. You only have a few minutes to do that. You need to be on your toes all the time, no matter what. In this job you need to be focused and in the zone. A great day on the job is when you have an impact on the patient. That could be a simple transfer, bringing a patient to, say, a rehab appointment. Many of our patients are older and may be alone, so being able to have a conversation with them and connect with them is a great day. Giving back to my community has always been something I’ve been passionate about. It’s rewarding to be able to help someone. Make them smile when they’re having a bad day.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As cliche as it sounds, you see the EMTs and paramedics on TV and I kind of wanted that rush. I wanted the exposure to patient care. I love it. It's been great. I've learned so much from the people I work with, from my patients and all the skills I've developed. And there's always something new that you learn every day, so I can never be bored at work. It's definitely very rewarding. It’s hard to explain but there's really no better feeling. It's nice because, you know, you feel like you've gained so much from your communities. It's nice to have such great partners that you know and interact with, like the fire department, doctors and nurses. When you have really great partners to work with, you have great communication - and it shows it in your calls - everything flows. One person does one thing on scene, the other person knows exactly what the other one needs. And if you have a good team, especially because we'll deal with other crews as well, and everybody's on the same page, those successful calls are one of the best things. So I had a call with one of my permanent partners that I work with, and we actually had great progress. After compressions and giving them oxygen and everything we had a full, complete recovery. And so great team, great success. My priority is doing exactly what I need to do for this patient. And once I focus on a patient, I communicate with them and ask them questions to make sure they know that I know what I'm doing and make them feel calm. Courage is when you have to step up, especially during very difficult calls or sometimes where someone’s safety might be threatened and you have to do your job to make sure that your patients are cared for.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'm an emergency medical dispatcher, I take 911 calls from the communities that we service, talk to people and give them instructions on how to help themselves or someone else until the emergency personnel show up. I do this job because I have a love for people. I have love for the community. I like to be able to help people and make a horrible day for them somewhat better. Usually, when someone calls 911, it's probably one of the worst days of their life or someone else's life. So I'd like to try to be comforting and help them through that. To be good at what I do you need to have a true compassion for people, a lot of patience, and be able to not get worked up in a terrible situation. You have to help them through it, you have to be calm, you have to be laid back and understanding - you know, truly care about what's going on with somebody. Courage on call in the dispatch center is knowing that you could be getting a call that could be pretty traumatic, or it could be something that's really painful for somebody, or there could be hysteria on the other line. And you have to have the courage to be able to handle that situation. To know that you were a part of saving somebody's life is huge. When someone calls when a person is in cardiac arrest, and you give them CPR instructions, and they're doing what you're telling them. It’s great knowing that you're a piece of that person coming back I think that if you wanted to come into this field, communication is key. You have to be able to talk to somebody, maybe someone who's angry, someone who is mean- you have to have the ability to be able to converse with that person, and be able to take them from being an angry, mean, ugly, hysterical person to kind of bring them back down to somebody who you can help.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I got into it because I was in college and I said, You know, I'm not going to work in an office. I do not want to do that. I always kind of had police or fire in the back of my head. So I took the EMT class, and I started doing it, and I loved it. I was pretty good at it. So that's kind of how I stumbled into it. I wasn't planning to be a paramedic or anything like that, but kind of found my way in through looking for other things. I stay in this profession because I like the people that I work with, you know, they're more of my family. I had so many of them at my wedding that I would just consider them more friends than co-workers. And it's a fun job at times, there's nothing else like it in the world. It's definitely a good feeling to give back to the community. You feel accomplished, you feel satisfied that you've helped someone and that, you know, you've made a difference whether it's with them or their family. You can see the relief in their eyes a lot of the times when you’re there to do your job and that what you’re doing really helps. That makes you feel like you're doing good. You're doing the right thing. The role of courage in EMS, I would say is just showing up. Someone's life depends on you doing your job.</image:caption>
